Wakefield’s Fifita deal still on the table contrary to reports

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ bid to sign David Fifita – as revealed in League Express this past Monday – is still on the table.

Reports in Australia had suggested that the deal to bring the Cronulla forward to Super League and Belle Vue had stalled, but TotalRL understands that those reports are wide of the mark.

Trinity are still hopeful of landing their man in the coming days and weeks, in a bid to get the NRL star on board in time for the Super 8s.

Wildcats coach Chris Chester would not be drawn on the identity of the player when quizzed by League Express last week, but did admit he’s hopeful of a deal being concluded soon.

“Initially we put the idea of signing someone to the back of our minds because of the run we’d been on, but when we played Hull FC recently it made me realise we probably are one big bloke short, and we’re light in terms of a little bit of punch and strike up the middle,” he said.

“We have targeted someone and we’re hopeful that over the next seven to ten days we could be making an announcement.

“It’d be a huge coup to get someone in mid-season, and as I say it was evident we struggled to contain Hull’s big blokes and I just wanted us to strengthen things up there.

“He’s a player that I know quite well who has gone really well in the NRL and he’d be a big signing for this club if we could get him over the line.”
