Wales finish group stage on a high against USA

WALES 92 USA 18
IAN GOLDEN, WIN Entertainment Centre, Wollongong, Friday

WALES bounced back after two defeats to run home easy winners in a polished performance.

John Berriman, Jonathan Gill and Fionn McCabe scored their first Welsh tries, and all went on to record hat-tricks (four for Berriman).

Gareth Ramsey scored two tries on his debut, Andrew Higgins kicked his 150th Welsh goal with the second of twelve here, and Matthew Turner scored his 50th try of the season for club and country.

Berriman gave Wales a third-minute lead and Higgins scored their second try three minutes later.

McCabe scored his first on ten minutes before Berriman got a brace to complete his hat-trick.

Stuart Williams, Gill, McCabe and Higgins soon added further tries, then Ramsey brought up the half-century and was hugged by his emotional son, Sid, who was rested for this game.

USA were close to a first-half try, but Wales defended well as Mo Fox was twice denied. They finally over the line 20 seconds after the break through Mackenzie Johnson, and Bill Johnstone converted.

Ramsey and Williams added further Wales tries, then USA got two back, Fox claiming his score before Johnson outpaced everyone. Johnstone converted both.

Berriman soon went over for his fourth, Gill added two, and McCabe went over for his third.

Matthew Turner landed two late conversions, the latter for his landmark try.
