Warrington Wolves’ defeat to Wigan last night brought the curtain down on their 2014 season – but there was a small shred of comfort, as their place in the semi-finals of the Super League play-offs earned them a spot in next year’s World Club Series tournament.
Having finished above Catalan Dragons – the other losing semi-finalist this weekend – in the regular season league table, the Wolves will take their place in the newly revamped tournament, alongside St Helens and Wigan Warriors.
Both of those sides are confirmed to be competing in the tournament after reaching the Grand Final next Saturday.
The six-team tournament will feature three Super League sides taking on three NRL teams – with South Sydney and Brisbane Broncos already confirmed as competitors.
If Canterbury win the NRL Grand Final tomorrow, they will definitely be the third team to take part in the event.
