Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess says Peter V’landys ‘makes a lot of sense’

WARRINGTON WOLVES head coach Sam Burgess has admitted Australian Rugby League Commission chief Peter V’landys “makes a lot of sense” when talking about the future of Super League amidst talks of an NRL takeover.

The chairman of the ARLC met with officials from some Super League clubs and the RFL last week during the Ashes Test Series.

From that meeting, V’landys confirmed the NRL were interested in assisting its northern hemisphere counterpart, including potentially through investment.

But V’landys also warned that the finances of the competition do not stack up, especially when considering Super League will be expanding to 14 teams for next season and upcoming negotiations over a new TV deal for 2027 and beyond.

“All we’ve done is analyse the financial viability and I can see a train crash if they don’t get the broadcast revenue they need to sustain a 14-team competition,” V’landys told the BBC.

In response, Burgess, who spent over a decade in the NRL with South Sydney Rabbitohs, agreed that Super League needs to become more attractive.

Burgess, a guest during England’s 14-4 loss to Australia last Saturday, said on the BBC: “Peter V’landys makes a lot of sense. He knows what works and I agree with him that the game needs to be packaged up better and sold a lot better.

“You can see here today, it’s a great product and we’ve got to do a better job of packaging that and distributing it and enticing fans to come along.

“Their involvement can only help and Peter V’landys, if he says he’s going to do something then he will do it. I think it’s only a positive thing that he’s involved in the game over here.”
