Wests make poor Cowboys pay

Wests Tigers got back to winning ways as they ran out 20-12 winners over North Queensland Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval.

The Tigers earned the opening try when a Michael Morgan kick was batted back by Kyle Feldt into the arms of Luke Brooks. The halfback streaked away for a 90-metre try.

Brooks turned provider soon after. He produced a great offload for Malakai Watene-Zelezniak. Two Esan Marsters misses from the tee meant the lead was only eight.

That lead was only two points with four minutes to go in the half. A Johnathan Thurston kick found Shaun Fensom who showed great skill to find Te Maire Martin. The hooker finished off the try well.

The Cowboys started the second half poorly. After only completing one of their first four sets, they were punished. Marsters stood up Justin O’Neill allowing David Nofoaluma to dive over.

But North Queensland got themselves level when a Benji Marshall kick fell for Antonio Winterstein. The winger ran for the corner but was caught by Corey Thompson. The former-Widnes man couldn’t stop the winger from grounding the ball, however.

Marsters’ first successful kick from a penalty nudged the Tigers ahead at 14-12. The centre then scored a try with eleven minutes to go to seal the game when a Watene-Zelezniak pass found him in space.
