Wheelchair Super League round-up: Halifax Panthers lift League Leaders’ Shield

HALIFAX PANTHERS have completed part two of their potential ‘double treble’, after beating BRADFORD BULLS 99-28 in front of a large, boisterous crowd to lift the League Leaders’ Shield for the second year in a row.

Jack Brown scored eleven of their 18 tries, eight of them converted by Wayne Boardman including the first three, by Finlay O’Neill, Boardman and Brown, which put them 18-0 up early.

Tom Martin, who scored for Halifax in their 99-18 win over Bradford earlier this season, got the Bulls’ opening try against his old club and went on to get a hat-trick.

Michael Potter got another try back from Bradford in the first half that Keiron Johnson improved, but they were 56-10 down by the break.

Joe Calcott and Jack Stockton were also among the first-half scorers, the latter’s bringing up 1,000 Panthers points for the season.

Jordan Holt scored Halifax’s first and last tries of the second half, Brown’s skills added five tries to the six he got in the first half, while O’Neill added one try, four goals and a field-goal to one first-half conversion.

Consolation tries for Bradford in the second half came the way of Johnson and Martin, who both went over twice.

Daniel McGrath added the final goal of the game, before his opponents received their trophy.

WIGAN WARRIORS leapt into second place in the table, as we head into the final regular-season round, after hammering EDINBURGH GIANTS 89-16.

It was a shaky start for Wigan as Edinburgh twice struck early, Stephen Halsey converting tries by himself and Calum Davidson with a Nathan Roberts try for the Warriors, goaled by Toby Burton-Carter, in between.

But they levelled with Matthew Turner’s try and the first of Jack Heggie’s 13 conversions, then an Adam Rigby try, Phil Roberts field-goal and Heggie double made it 31-12 by half-time.

Mel Griffith opened the second half before Heggie completed his hat-trick from a quick play-the-ball by Oran Spain, who then got on the scoresheet himself.

Heggie added two more tries in quick succession to bring his tally to five and Phil Roberts, Burton-Carter, Nathan Roberts, Spain and Turner all added further Wigan tries, before Davidson claimed a consolation try in the corner for Edinburgh.

LONDON ROOSTERS slipped behind Wigan on points difference despite beating SHEFFIELD EAGLES 72-36.

Sheffield took the lead thanks to a Joe Wink-Simmonds try and also added first-half scores from Stephen Reilly and Chris Haynes, the latter converted by Ben Simpson.

But London were dominant for most of the encounter. Hat-tricks from Joe Coyd, who also kicked five first-half goals, and Jack Linden, plus a try for Mason Billington, put them into a 38-14 lead at the break.

Linden scored London’s first two tries of the second half, with Arun Bains and Mason Billington soon following him over. Coyd added two more tries near to the end of the match, with Lewis King completing the scoring. Coyd converted three of the second-half tries.

Sheffield’s second-half tries came from Jenny Pearson, Haynes, Luis Domingos and Wink-Simmonds, the latter also converting three times.

LEEDS RHINOS did their own quest for second place the world of good by beating HULL FC 122-8, the second largest win in this season’s competition.

Josh Butler scored 15 tries during the course of the match, a record haul for one player in a Super League or Challenge Cup match this season, nine of them in the second half.

Nathan Collins scored one try and kicked 14 goals, Nathan Mullhall got a try and five goals, with Jodie Boyd-Ward and Cameron Hills each crossing twice.

Leeds were 62-0 up at half-time, with Hull’s second-half tries both coming from Nathan Sherwood.
