Whitehaven re-sign Mason Lewthwaite from Workington

WHITEHAVEN have re-signed Mason Lewthwaite on a two-year contract after the secondrower spent a season-and-a-half at neighbours Workington.

The 26-year started out at community club Kells and played for England Community Lions Under 23s before stepping up to professional level with nearby Whitehaven in 2025.

That followed rugby union involvement with Newcastle Falcons and Penrith.

Lewthwaite made a big impact at the Ortus REC with nine tries in eleven matches before a switch to Workington in July 2025.

He has since turned out 26 times for Town, notching another nine tries.

Lewthwaite had been tipped to return to Kells, but has now lined up with coach James Newton, one of his former Whitehaven teammates.

“I’ve seen what Newts and Gus (his assistant Neil Frazer) have been doing,” he explained.

“They really look like they’ve got a good group and good club culture going on and I wanted to get involved with it.”

Whitehaven had previously signed prop Ross Ainley, another former Kells man, from Workington and winger Andrew Bulman from Barrow, the latter also penning a two-year contract.

They are aiming to build on this year’s encouraging ninth-placed finish.
