Widnes lose Brown for six weeks

Widnes Vikings’ top-eight First Utility Super League hopes have been dealt a major blow with the loss of skipper Kevin Brown for at least six weeks with an ankle injury.

The former Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants stand-off, who has been one of the form players in Super League this year, sustained ankle-ligament damage during the Vikings’ 36-20 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat to St Helens and is to see a specialist to discover the extent of the injury.

“He’ll be in a boot for six weeks definitely,” said Widnes coach Denis Betts. “It could be even longer depending on what it looks like when he comes out of the boot.”

The injury to Brown is likely to create an opening for Tom Gilmore, who was recently recalled from his loan spell at London Broncos.

The Vikings are currently in the bottom four with four games left before the split for the Super 8s.
