Wigan: Burgess prepared to fight for his place

Wigan winger Joe Burgess is prepared to fight for his place in Shaun Wane’s squad after being overlooked for tomorrow night’s clash with Leeds Rhinos, despite being available after recovering from a knee injury.

The 19-year-old has been out since July but made an impressive comeback for Wigan’s academy side in their 22-40 win over Bradford last week.

However, it wasn’t enough to win his spot back from either Dominic Manfredi or Josh Charnley, who were both named in Wane’s 19-man squad at his expense.

“I am feeling confident and ready to be involved with the first team again whenever I get the chance,” he told Monday’s League Express.

“But I know I will have to train hard and play well to get back into the side. Dom Manfredi has been given his chance while I’ve been out and has been doing really well, so I’ll just need to work hard and try and earn my spot back.

“If I want to be playing in the play-offs I probably need some more Super League games behind me.”

On his return to competitive action, Burgess added: “It was good to get out there again.

“I was a bit rusty in the first half but felt I was back to my normal self in the second half. I probably needed that game to get up to speed again.”
