Workington Town do double over Hunslet

WORKINGTON TOWN 40 HUNSLET 14
DAVE PARKINSON, Fibrus Community Stadium, Sunday

WORKINGTON returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with an eight-try triumph to claim their first double of the season.

Hunslet made a good start and took the lead after twelve minutes when Lee Gaskell fired a pass right and Mo Agoro crossed ahead of Braden Leigh. Billy Jowitt goaled.

Facing a breeze, Jake Carter put his restart short and Town contested with Ross Ainley gathering possession. They pushed close before Evan Lawther forced his way past three defenders to score in the 14th minute.

Workington were finding their groove and Leigh finished a three-pass play as Dom Wear, Carter and Zarrin Galea combined.

Although Hunslet got in a couple of good positions, solid tackling on Myles Harrop kept them at bay.

Workington finished the first half well on top with two more tries.

The first came after 31 minutes when a smart inside pass from Bear Williams released Galea and although the move was ended, later in the set, Carter grabbed the score and finally converted.

Then three minutes from half-time, Lucas Castle thundered 25 metres and offloaded for the flying Galea to go under the posts. Carter’s second goal made it 20-6 at half-time.

Early in the second period, the hosts took advantage of space around the ruck with Tuarae Rawhiti strolling over. Carter goaled.

When Eddie Battye was sinbinned for jumping back into the tackle, Workington took full advantage.

Mason Lewthwaite streamed over on the left after 51 minutes, then enterprising hands released Lewthwaite again, although this time he handed back inside for Carter to run to the line from 25 metres for 34-6.

Workington brought up 40 points in emphatic style when Rio Corkill drove over from dummy-half after Wear won another set of six. Carter completed his four-goal haul.

Hunslet scored twice at the end to reduce the lead.

First Harrop broke through on the left and charged 60 metres, then in the final minute, the ball was worked left again and Harrop was able to offload for Jimmy Watson to score in the corner.

GAMESTAR: Workington stand-off Jake Carter’s input was a brilliant throughout, and he scored two tries and four goals.

GAMEBREAKER: Tuarae Rawhiti’s try early in the second half put Town too far in front.
