STAR York Knights prop Paul Vaughan insists he needs to be doing more for his side.
The big-name Aussie signing produced some storming carries in last Friday’s 26-14 loss against Wakefield Trinity.
York, who remain on just two Super League wins despite another encouraging display, had trailed by only two points until Tom Johnstone’s 75th minute try ended their hopes of success.
Vaughan, 34, was their major recruit for their first season in Super League after joining from Warrington Wolves and he recognises the responsibility that comes with that status.
“I didn’t do much training in pre-season so I’m just trying to find my feet,” he said.
“But in the last couple of weeks I’m getting back to where I need to be. I just want to contribute more in games.
“I am harsh on myself at times but I want to get the best out of myself.
“I just have to keep turning up.”
After losing out at Wigan Warriors by just a point, York played their part in another fiercely-fought contest, only to end up with no reward.
Former New South Wales State of Origin forward Vaughan added: “We’re in the games.
“We just need to improve on the key moments. We’re just not icing them.
“We’re not happy that we’re competing: we want to be winning these games.
“But there’s a lot more growth in the team. That’s the pleasing thing.”
York’s hopes of pushing on for a third Super League scalp reduced when, bizarrely, they lost three backs to second-half injuries: winger Ben Jones-Bishop, centre Sam Wood and fullback Toa Mata’afa.
They finished the game with twelve men and were already without crocked captain Liam Harris and scrum-half Danny Richardson, the latter having pulled up in the captain’s run.
Vaughan conceded: “We didn’t have much left on the bench as a couple of key players went off injured.
“But the wins will come. We’ve got Huddersfield next, which is probably a must-win for us. We’ll review, reset and go again.”
