York RL community in mourning for Stuart Evans

WELL-KNOWN referee Stuart Evans has passed away after a short illness.
Mr Evans, who was 68, died on Thursday 17 November.
In addition to officiating at grass roots level, he was also an active PRO for the York Referees’ Society and for the York & District Amateur Rugby League. He had also been voted, last year, on to the BARLA Board of Management.
Stuart Evans, who had refereed for four decades, was a lifelong York supporter, and the club’s unofficial historian and statistician. He was the only match official to be named in the York Rugby League Legends list.
He was feted, in 2015, as the Rugby Football League’s Community Match Official of the Year, and was honoured at the 2016 Active York Sports Awards for his outstanding contribution to sport in the city.
He was, last month, presented with a trophy by the York ARL for outstanding service to amateur Rugby League.
