Maureen, What Colin is referring to was when there were 30 teams in the League. There were 16 Yorkshire teams and 14 Lancashire teams. One Yorkshire team played in the Lancashire section. The teams from Yorkshire played all other Yorkshire teams home and away. Likewise the Lancashire teams. Then they also played against Lancashire opposition dependent upon where they had finished the previous season. The top 5 Yorkshire teams played the top 5 Lancashire teams and so on down the league. This gave a total of 38 games per season. Obviously it wouldn't work today as the top players would be playing too much rugby.
