When East meets West…

Wales Rugby League are hosting an afternoon worth of events at the Caerphilly County Borough Centre of Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach this Sunday writes Ian Golden.

An “East versus West” day sees a triple header of action starts with East Wales hosting the West at three different age groups.

The under 14s are up first at 2.15pm before the 15s play their game at 3.15pm and the 16s conclude the afternoon at 4.15pm.

These matches are the first in a three-game series at each level, the second set being on May 29th with the series concluding on August 29th.

West Wales team manager Peter Tiffin says that everyone is looking forward to the day.

He said: “We’ve been putting the boys through their paces since mid-November. This year we have been using a players to leaders system which allows us all as coaching staff to analyse each player and help them improve with plenty of feedback.

“We are all really looking forward to seeing all the boys in a game situation, this is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved and is great to see so many wanting to be a part of Rugby League in Wales.

“With the three games between East and West plus another being organised for the both to face North Wales there is plenty to look forward too over the next few months.”

East Wales coach Wayne Ponting adds: “Here in the East we’re looking to build on last year’s wins. This year we’ve a stronger set-up and we think we’ll do well.

“It’s also great to start at younger age this year and to see players at under 14 level while in the under 16s, this series is great preparation for everyone, players and coaching staff alike, before the test match against England in August.”

Admission to the whole afternoon is £1 for adults and free for juniors.
