Smith thrilled with Wakefield’s first win

A thrilled Brian Smith couldn’t contain his delight after victory over Hull KR, shouting ‘we’re off the bottom’ in his post-match press conference.

The Wildcats held on to defeat Rovers 14-12, with tries from Mickael Simon and Stuart Howarth earning them victory.

It moved Wakefield up to eighth in Super League, and Smith was evidently delighted.

“Our defence was superb, and I have to give credit to my group of players,” he said.

“Every one of them put his body on the line in very difficult conditions, and despite conceding 15 penalties.

“Anyone who had not been here today would find it hard to credit what was happening sometimes. If we want to look at what’s wrong with our game, after the way NRL teams have dealt with us this weekend, we need only study the video of this match.

“But there’s a togetherness about our group, they may shock a few people this year, including me. There’s no magic formula though and we’ll have to work hard over time to continue our improvement, starting on Friday for my family affair at my brother Tony’s Warrington.”
