Veivers hopes both Cumbria clubs survive

Workington coach Phil Veivers believes both Town and Whitehaven need the other to survive relegation from the Championship.

Veivers’ men picked up a dramatic 30-28 victory over their bitter rivals as Jarrod Sammut’s conversion following Jason Mossop’s try secured the bragging rights for Workington.

The two clubs occupy the Championship relegation places following the result, with Whitehaven three points adrift of Oldham and Sheffield while Workington are two points further behind.

Despite the two clubs battling each other for safety, Veivers hopes both clubs can remain in the second-tier.

“The two teams need each other in this division. When we play each other we give ourselves the two biggest gates of the season, so I think it’s vital that both teams are in this division for each other. I’m not about their position, I’d prefer both teams to be further up the table and comfortable in this division.”
