Opportunity beckons for Welsh student players

AMBITIOUS Student players in Wales have been invited to take part in a trial-cum-training session ahead of next year’s World Cup.
The event will take place on Sunday 27 November at Llantwit Major Football Club, Windmill Lane Ground, Frampton Lane, Llantwit Major CF61 2UZ from 9.30am to 4.00pm.
Players who are eventually selected will form the squad that will head to the World Cup in Australia next July.
Manager Mark Jones said: “This is a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Student players to play for their country in the World Cup in Australia in 2017.
“Wales Students have been very successful over the last 10 years and are currently ranked third in the world.”
He continued: “Many former players have been snapped up by some of the biggest Rugby League clubs in the country and have made good careers. Anyone who also fancies that challenge should register and see what they can do.”
Registrations can be completed by emailing mark.jones@walesrugbyleague.co.uk by
Friday 25 November.
All members of last year’s Wales Student squad who are still eligible are required to attend – to be eligible, a player must be studying in Sixth Form, College or University, and either have been born in Wales or have Welsh parents/grandparents. They can, in addition, either study in Wales or have residency in that country.
The trials will be followed by a series of games involving four of the six Student Rugby League teams in south Wales.
The mini-series will be contested by Aberystwyth, Cardiff Metropolitan and Swansea Universities, together with the University of South Wales (Bangor University and Cardiff Metropolitan A are the two teams not included) and will get underway on Sunday 11 December at The Wern, Merthyr Tydfil – the home of the South Wales Ironmen.
A combined `Origin’ game, between East and West, will follow at the turn of the year in which Cardiff Met and USW will represent East Universities, with Aberystwyth and Swansea combining on behalf of West Universities. The game, at Parc Stebonheath in Llanelli – the home of the West Wales Raiders – will be played on Sunday 12 February and will be part of the selection process ahead of the Student Rugby League World Cup.
