Cameron Smith gives update on injury recovery as Leeds Rhinos return nears

LEEDS RHINOS co-captain Cameron Smith is well on his way to recovery following a full ankle reconstruction.

The forward has been sidelined for the past two months having suffered a ruptured syndesmosis ligament in round two against Salford Red Devils.

“I’ve had a synthetic ligament put at the front of my ankle,” explained Smith.

“My tib and fib have been sort of squeezed together because the ligament holds the two bones together and that’s what I ruptured.

“Rehab has gone really well though, we’ve got a great physio at the Rhinos who have looked after me and I’m not too far off.”

Smith won’t be available for Magic Weekend but a return for their next game two weeks later, at home to Hull FC, is not out of the question.

“I’ve not really got a game in mind,” he admitted.

“I’m just taking it as it comes because some days are better than others and I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself to come back for a game in case it isn’t right.”

Leeds have made decent progress in his absence, currently sitting in the play-off places on points difference.

“Across the board you can see a change in style and mentality from where it’s been previously,” observed Smith.

“I’m excited to do my little bit once I get back.”
