WHILST announcing the signing of Jason Demetriou as head coach on a three-year deal, the London Broncos set tongues wagging with the claim that they are “awaiting confirmation of its Super League return”.
Demetriou’s appointment comes off the back of the takeover of the capital club by NRL legend Darren Lockyer and his business partner Grant Wechsel.
The Broncos have endured a difficult year in the Championship, finishing tenth with head coach Mike Eccles struggling to put together a competitive side for the first part of the season following the club’s relegation from Super League.
However, it appears as though London’s stay in the second tier may be short-lived, with the club claiming, in its public release of Demetriou’s confirmation, that they are “awaiting confirmation of its Super League return”.
And in doing so, “the Broncos have set about establishing a coaching and performance structure that would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any top-flight organisation.”
The Broncos are one of nine clubs that have applied to become part of an expanded 14-team Super League in 2026.
While 12 will be chosen under the grading system as per 2025, two more clubs will be picked by an independent panel chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine.
Following Demetriou’s appointment, he said: “London has incredible potential as a rugby league city.
“The club’s ambition and the opportunity to help shape its future at this important stage made this an exciting challenge. I can’t wait to get started.”
Eccles is, however, expected to stay on in some kind of capacity in the new-look Broncos.
