Hull FC youngster in line for Welsh international history

WALES could field the second youngest debutant in their history when they face Ireland again on Saturday.

Their head coach, Paul Berry, has made only one change to his squad from last Saturday’s 24-0 win in Neath as the sides conclude a two-match series at Featherstone’s Millennium Stadium.

Retiring forward Rhodri Lloyd, who scored a try and a goal in that fixture to finish his professional career on a high, has been replaced by Hull FC teenager Charlie Thomas.

Thomas, 17, is a product of Swansea Rams and currently plays for Hull’s academy team.

If he plays, he would be second only to Lloyd himself – who debuted in 2010 against Italy, also aged 17 – as Wales’ youngest international.

George Birch could also be in line for a debut after being named as 18th man last week while Curtis Davies is back in contention following injury.

Berry said: “We were obviously pleased with last weekend but while it’s certainly a good start, it is just a start. Saturday is another step on the road to where we want to get to.

“Ireland will no doubt be much improved from last week. We need to be prepared to meet that challenge as we grow and learn together.”

Irish head coach Ged Corcoran has named the same squad despite a “very disappointing start” to the series.

He added: “There was a huge focus on honesty, accountability and owning the wrongs after game one.

“It was great to see where our pathways players are at, and they will also be better for experience.”
