Sean Long departs Oldham in shock exit

SEAN LONG has left Oldham by mutual consent after two seasons in charge.

Long guided the Roughyeds to the League One title in 2024, winning 19 of 20 matches with a squad expensively recruited by chairman Bill Quinn and managing director Mike Ford.

He then helped them to a fourth-placed finish in the Championship last season, their highest position in more than 20 years.

However, a surprise home defeat to Halifax Panthers in the first round of the play-offs has proven to be Long’s final game in charge.

The Super League-aspiring club said: “We thank him for his efforts and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Oldham RLFC.

“Further details of our 2026 coaching team will be shared in due course.”

In his first head coach role, Long was sacked by Featherstone Rovers in 2023 despite being eight points clear at the top of the Championship.

He has previously been an assistant with Salford Red Devils, St Helens and Leeds Rhinos, as well as in rugby union with Harlequins.
