Sam Burgess on why Warrington Wolves failed in 2025 and why 2026 feels different

SAM BURGESS believes that a torrid run of injuries and the Challenge Cup heartbreak were just some of the reasons as to why Warrington Wolves floundered in 2025.

The Wolves had been predicted to build on their 2024 season under Burgess when they made it to the Challenge Cup Final and the Super League play-offs.

But, although Warrington made the Challenge Cup Final once more at Wembley last season, they fell off a giant cliff towards the back end of the league campaign.

So why did Warrington fall in 2025?

“It’s a good question, there were a number of reasons and you could point to some things.

“All in all, a bit of good will come from it. As a club we learnt a lot about ourselves and understood where we are at.

“We’ve got to close the gap and be more consistent as a group. We had a torrid run with injuries and the heartbreak of the Challenge Cup.

“We struggled to recover but good things will come out of it if you zoom out.”

Has there been anything different from Burgess this time around?

“Not much has changed day-to-day for me but I’m obviously wanting the team to do well.

“It’s what I’ve been doing since I arrived at the club. We enjoyed pre-season – as much as players can.

“The players have had some hard days, but we have really come together as a group so it’s been nice.”
