SAM BURGESS praised Warrington Wolves’ attitude and mentality as they earned back-to-back wins at Bradford Bulls.
Quick-fire tries either side of half-time helped the visitors ease to a 42-4 victory against a patched-up Bulls, who had only Ethan Ryan’s first-half opener to show for their efforts.
Wire’s 42 unanswered points is the second-highest away total at Bartercard Odsal this season – only behind Hull KR’s 48 scored back in April – with Burgess left impressed by his side’s ability to rack up points at a ground on which it is notoriously hard to do so.
“I’m pleased with the performance,” enthused the head coach, whose side welcome York Knights before travelling to Hull KR amid a busy ten-day spell.
“Our attitude was where it needed to be today.
“It’s a tough place to come. The field length and width is completely different to what we’re used to, so I’m proud of the way that we adapted.
“We changed a couple of things up.
“The average points they (Bradford) have conceded at this place is 24 over the course of the season, which is lower than they concede away.
“It’s harder to score points here for sure.”
Both Joe Philbin – who later limped off with a lower leg injury – and Toafofoa Sipley changed the momentum in Warrington’s favour from the bench.
And Burgess is pleased to see the pair’s partnership thriving, explaining: “Joe and Tof are building a nice one-two combo off the bench.
“They’re enjoying and complementing each other, and we’re getting them into the game at a good time.
“A couple of weeks in a row now they’ve been very good for us.
“Our game plan was very controlled, we worked hard defensively and put an emphasis on our defence.
“We felt if we controlled the ball enough, we’d post some points, but we were pretty direct and I was happy with that.”
