National Leagues round-up: Lock Lane escape the drop zone

LOCK LANE are out of the PREMIER DIVISION’S relegation zone.

The Castleford outfit have risen above Heworth, thanks to a 22-12 home victory over ROCHDALE MAYFIELD, who are still seeking a first win of the season after nine outings.

Mayfield were 12-10 ahead as the hour beckoned, Cole Connolly having converted tries by Zac Baker and Phil Futi in response to touchdowns by Morgan Jones and Max Hope, the first of which Morgan Punchard had improved.

But the Lane regained a lead they were destined not to lose when Punchard nipped over on 58 minutes, and there was no way back for the visitors when Jones completed his brace with a couple of minutes left, Calum Butler booting his second conversion.

HEWORTH are second from bottom after going down to a fifth successive reverse with a 42-6 home defeat at the hands of second-placed HUNSLET ARLFC, who were seeking a fifth win on the hoof.

The south Leeds side led 24-0 at the break, thanks to tries by Tyler Dargan, Jordan Gale, Alfie Goddard and, after the hosts’ Dan Clarke had been sinbinned for a professional foul, Junior Rowse.

Dan Sowerby crossed shortly after the restart and although Ben Barnard charged in for Heworth on 53 minutes – Jack Sadler improving – Hunslet replied with tries by the hour (at which stage the points dried up) by Dargan and Josh McLelland, with Gale completing a seven-from-seven return with the boot.

Across town unbeaten leaders WEST HULL won 28-4 at YORK ACORN, who are too close to the drop-zone for comfort after a sixth successive defeat.

Acorn rode out the sinbinning on seven minutes of Josh Thompson for dissent, but Wests led 10-0 at half-time through Jack Sanderson’s conversion of his own try on 24 minutes and a subsequent touchdown to Kian Goodhand.

Josh Wood scampered over on 54 minutes and tries followed in the final quarter for Jack Lazenby and Josh Jarvis, with Sanderson totalling four goals.

George Hunt touched down at the end but it was too little, too late for Acorn.

A try two minutes from time by Jamie Shields, with Kegan Brennan kicking his fifth goal, sealed a fourth win on the trot for WATERHEAD against a SIDDAL side that, prior to the 26-18 reverse, had been seeking a fifth successive victory.

Siddal, who had led 12-8 at the interval through tries by Jamie Greenwood and Macauley Higgins, were limited to a Harry Milnes touchdown and Josh Brown’s third conversion in the second period.

Vinny Arthurs, Gareth Owen and Adam Robinson had replied for the Warriors prior to Shields’ clincher.

Ryan Houghton steered THATTO HEATH to a 32-24 win over WEST BOWLING after the Bradford outfit had led 12-0 midway through the first half courtesy of tries by Lewis Taylor and Haydn Spence.

The Crusaders bounced back to lead 18-12 with a Liam Kenyon brace, an Adam Tubey effort and the first three of Houghton’s six goals.

Wests restored parity by the break through Spence’s second try but by the time Logan Simpson nipped over on 75 minutes – Harry Williams booting his fourth goal – Thatto were fourteen points clear, Houghton and Lewis Pilling having crossed after the former had landed a penalty.

A charge-down of a field goal attempt by Dec Parkinson in the closing seconds helped WATH BROW HORNETS earn a 12-12 draw at WIGAN ST JUDES.

Hornets had led 12-0 at the break, Sam Curwen having converted tries by Callum Creasey and Owen McCartney.

Judes, though, levelled matters by the 68th minute with unanswered touchdowns by Jacob Dugdale and Connor Parkinson, Danny Fallon adding both goals. And, thanks to the thwarting of Parkinson, the honours were shared.

KELLS, who travelled to SHAW CROSS as DIVISION ONE leaders, returned to Cumbria celebrating a 28-12 win – but are now second in the table, on just two points in the points difference column – to Dewsbury Celtic.

Shaw Cross led 12-6 as the interval beckoned, Evan Stephenson having converted tries by Jack Toulson and Ben Land.

But the Miners, for whom Aaron Burns had already crossed, went in at the break 14-12 ahead, thanks to a Casey Chambers try and a penalty by Harley Wilson, who also improved both touchdowns.

But it was one-way traffic in the second period, Kells posting unanswered tries by Clarke Chambers, Tyce Walmsley and Jacob Hodgson, with Wilson converting one effort.

The Chambers brothers, including Cory, who was an absentee on the day, are the sons of Whitehaven legend Craig Chambers.

DEWSBURY CELTIC went behind to a 23rd minute penalty by OULTON’S Archie Craggs but bounced back to prevail 32-2.

Joe Mitchell, Billy Yarrow and Drew Judge-Clarke crossed by the break, and touchdowns against the relegation-haunted Raiders followed in the second period for Luke Fox, Mitchell again, and Joel Gibson, who kicked four goals.

OLDHAM ST ANNES registered a first win of the season, after eight successive defeats, to rise above PILKINGTONS off the foot of the table through a 12-4 triumph.

Annes led 8-0 at half-time, courtesy of Callum Harris’ try and a conversion and a penalty by Matt Whitehead.

Pilks, who have now lost five games on the trot, opened their account with only three minutes left, Ian Mather dotting down, but the Saints sealed their success with a James Hall touchdown.

Three red cards proved to be crucial as EAST LEEDS, who were 18-0 ahead against visitors DEWSBURY MOOR at half-time, lost 30-24.

Luke Littlewood’s conversions of tries by Moris Kamano, Jack Norfolk and Billy Evans gave Easts a healthy cushion but quickfire touchdowns on the restart for the Maroons’ George Woodcock and Louie Walker, both goaled by Woodcock, pegged the lead back to six points.

The hosts’ Keidan Hartley was sent off for alleged dissent after the second score and Easts’ twelve men quickly conceded tries by Taylor Russell and Taireeq Garrick.

Alfie Crawford was sent off on 50 minutes and Dave Gibbons was red-carded five minutes from time and the Maroons duly added a penalty by Woodcock, his fifth goal, and the same player’s second try.

Isaac Coleman claimed a consolation score for the hosts in the last minute, Littlewood kicking his fourth goal.

Sam Peel crossed in the second minute for STANNINGLEY at LEIGH MINERS RANGERS, but the west Leeds outfit had to wait until two minutes from time for their next score, Elliott Whitaker scooting over and Zack Clayton appending his second conversion.

The Miners had, by that stage, done enough to earn a 28-12 verdict with a Marco Williamson hat-trick, a try and four goals for Isaac Hewitt and a Joe Davies touchdown.

WIGAN ST PATRICKS again had 17 players in place after having struggled a few weeks ago to raise a team, and the visitors were on level terms on the half-hour at EGREMONT RANGERS, Robbie Harper having converted one of tries by Conor Taylor and Reece Rowcroft in a rally from ten points down.

By the time Isaac Wheatley claimed Pats’ next try, however, on 75 minutes, Rangers had hit the half-century, earning a 50-14 success with two tries and seven goals for Joe Lewis, a Conor Williams brace and touchdowns for Jac Pae, Jack Conway, Jordan Baird, Jayden Tyson and Aaron Turnbull.
