SWINTON LIONS are seeking a new strength and conditioner following the departure of Dougie Owen after eight years at the club.
The Lions say experienced Owen, who has also had roles with the RFL and the Wales Students team, is taking on a fresh challenge.
He already lectures in sports biomechanics and strength and conditioning at Manchester’s University Academy 92.
That institution was co-founded by Lancaster University and members of Manchester United’s legendary ‘Class of 92’.
Owen is also working on a PhD investigating the interplay between cognitive load and physical performance in athletes.
“Dougie has been a stalwart of Swinton Lions for eight years, and his contribution during that time should not be underestimated,” said the club.
“His passion and dedication has left an indelible impression and he will be greatly missed by all of the players, staff and officials.”
Swinton are currently closing in on a successor, with their next match against Halifax on Sunday.
It will take place at Orrell due to the pitch renovation work at Heywood Road, which is being undertaken by rugby union landlords Sale.
The Lions are aiming to bounce back after their first defeat in four outings, 36-32 at Rochdale.
After leading 20-0, Swinton trailed 36-20 before scoring two converted tries to push the hosts close.
“We were on point for most of the first half, but paid the price for dropping our intensity and going away from the plan for a spell,” said coach Anthony Murray.
“We hit back later on and could have gained a draw or won, but it wasn’t to be.
“I was disappointed by the defeat but not the overall performance. I had no qualms with the effort and there are clear signs that we are moving forward as a team.”
