Sam Burgess takes ‘scrappy’ Warrington Wolves win after heavy disruption

SAM BURGESS said Warrington’s scrappy win over Hull was an “enjoyable” one after his side overcame major squad disruption to earn victory.

The Wolves head coach admitted he was nervous heading into the game, having had a number of late withdrawals – including one just four hours before kick-off.

“The spine that started tonight has had zero minutes together all week,” he revealed. “Leon (Hayes) has not played on the right, and Marc Sneyd came in four hours before the game.

“Lachlan (Webster) came in a day before – we have had a lot of withdrawals, and I knew it would be messy.

“I was really happy we found a way to get two points in what was a scrappy night.

“We expected Cai (Taylor-Wray) back – it was a week where there were possibly five or six back and none of them made it through, and then Ewan (Irwin) pulled out on the night of the game.

“I was very nervous before the game. There was a lot of change and disruption which gives you an excuse to lose so I was very proud. It wasn’t beautiful, but I liked it.”

Burgess also was impressed to see prop Liam Byrne grab an assist having tasked him to offer more.

“I have challenged Byrney to evolve his game,” he added. “He is a very skilful player but sometimes he is afraid to use it – but I wasn’t expecting the kick.”
