THE LAGUERRE brothers faced one another for the first time in a competitive match and lit up the Catalans Magic Weekend contest against Toulouse in Castres on Saturday evening.
Catalans right centre, Matthieu (27) and Toulouse left winger, Benjamin (24) lined up against each other on the same edge of the field, which left their parents covering their eyes.
Matthieu got himself on the scoresheet, while Benjamin produced a superb kick from his wing in-field for Brendan Hands to score mid-way through the first half, with the Toulouse winger earning bragging rights in the family home following Olympique’s dominant 60-18 win.
Speaking before the game, the Marseille born Matthieu said: “I was injured unfortunately in the game earlier this season.
“I made the friendly game at the beginning of the season but this is the first competitive game we will play against each other. It’s a different feeling.
“I’ve watched all the games of Toulouse and I’m really happy for him and his performances in this beautiful season (Benjamin has scored seven tries in 16 appearances).”
Looking ahead, Matthieu is hoping that his brother’s performances will see him earn a call-up to the French World Cup squad at the end of the season, which would see the brothers be the first siblings to play for France in almost 20 years.
And while Matthieu and Benjamin are lighting up Super League, their younger brother Julyan (17) is currently playing for the Salon under-19’s and is potentially the next brother off the Laguerre production line.
