LEIGH LEOPARDS head coach Adrian Lam has hailed David Armstrong on his return to the first-team squad following a ruptured ACL.
The 25-year-old suffered the serious injury midway through the 2025 season, but has returned to star for Leigh as the 2026 campaign enters its final stretch.
Armstrong scored eight tries in 15 appearances during his maiden season in the northern hemisphere before his injury struck and, whilst fullback is his preferred position, he impressed at centre and on the wing in the recent victories against Castleford Tigers and Hull FC.
Lam is even considering a spot for Armstrong – who scored twice against both Castleford and Hull – at halfback.
“Davey has been awesome,” the head coach enthused.
“It was always going to take time to come back from such a serious injury.
“I’m grateful he is playing some of his best rugby now. I am actually waiting for a chance to give him a go in the halves.
“He was a five-eighth coming through as a young boy in Newcastle so we will see what happens.”
It’s been a whirlwind campaign for the Leopards so far, with Lam’s side losing five of their opening eight Super League fixtures.
However, Leigh are now firmly eyeing up a top-six play-off spot, with Saturday’s 32-22 win over Hull propelling them up to fifth.
And Lam is proud of how his charges have turned things around.
He said: “We had a difficult start for us so I am proud of the squad. We have won some big games by close scores in difficult times.
“That is a good sign of a team that is connected. We have eight games now to find some rhythm, get players back and then have a good push for the semis.”
