HUDDERSFIELD coach Jim Lenihan has urged locals to take up the Giants’ offer of free admission to Saturday’s Super League clash with Catalans at the Accu Stadium (2pm).
The Yorkshire club is throwing open the doors of the ground it is leaving to reveal the one they will be playing at next season.
The Giants want to encourage as many people as possible to hear what they are calling “possibly the biggest announcement” in their 162-year history.
They are departing the Accu, which they have shared with current stadium owners Huddersfield Town FC since it was constructed in 1994, because they consider the 24,000-plus capacity venue too big for their needs.
Recently-installed executive chairman Ralph Rimmer is driving the Giants’ project to build their own ground of around 8,000 by 2030.
They need a venue to use in the interim, and that location will be revealed on Saturday, with some suggesting Dewsbury’s FLAIR Stadium is a possibility.
The eventual new ground is a central part of Rimmer’s plan to breathe new life into the club, who are currently bottom of Super League and attracted only 4,215 for their home game against Hull FC on Thursday.
Australian former Giants player Lenihan was appointed in June and tasked with leading an on-pitch improvement, and will be seeking a third successive win against Catalans after those over York and Hull.
“It’s an exciting time for Huddersfield Giants, and there are a lot of good people working really hard behind the scenes,” he said.
“Our sponsors have doubled, for example, and there are a number of initiatives going on, and myself, my staff and the players are working hard to provide a really competitive team the town can be proud of.
“I’d say to people take advantage of the free offer against Catalans, come out and follow what’s going on here.”
