WORKINGTON TOWN have completed a long chase by sealing the signing of Australian hooker or halfback Harry Fraser for next season.
The 23-year-old was on their radar two years ago, when he was catching the eye with Northern Hawks, who play in the Newcastle Rugby League competition and are a feeder team for NRL’s Newcastle Knights, where Fraser played in various development sides.
He joined York, then in the Championship, on a short-term deal twelve months ago, but struggled to make an impression.
Now Fraser, who has also played for Queensland Cup club Tweed Heads Seagulls’ Under 20s, will have a second chance to crack the English Rugby League scene after penning his Town contract with Jonty Gorley, the current Workington coach, who will become head of rugby when former Super League forward Brad Singleton takes the reins of the team next season.
“We tried to sign Harry for 2025, but he felt another year in Australia would better prepare him for coming to the UK,” explained Gorley.
“He has played at a good standard in Australia, and the York move showed he must have been doing something right. It’s great that he has now agreed to join us.
“Harry can play halfback or hooker and do the job to a high standard. He is a very astute attacker with a strong defensive game.”
