Huddersfield Giants add Majestic touch to stadium redevelopment

HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS have enlisted a local firm to help them redevelop their new home ground at Dewsbury.

Majestic Construction – who have been involved in upgrading the Accu Stadium in Huddersfield, which the club have now left after 32 years, saying it is too big for their needs – are supporting the £10 million-plus redevelopment of the FLAIR Stadium, where the Giants will play from next season.

Based in Huddersfield’s Holme Valley, Majestic are overseeing the relationship between the club, who have acquired the FLAIR Stadium, and principal contractor Marshall Construction, whose headquarters are in Elland, helping to co-ordinate the partnership and ensure the venue meets Super League requirements.

Initial work on the stadium which will remain home to Dewsbury Rams, including alterations to the pitch, improved floodlighting, refurbishment of the existing stands and new hospitality suites, dressing rooms and press facilities, is already under way.

In the longer term, the Giants plan to raise the capacity of the FLAIR Stadium from around 5,000 to 8,000-plus by building a new stand at the currently-unused end of the ground.

There will be the potential to expand capacity to 12,000 in the future, although the Giants insist they are committed to their stated long-term goal of constructing a new stadium in the Huddersfield area.

Giants chairman Ralph Rimmer said: “Majestic have a huge wealth of knowledge in stadium construction, so we felt it was essential to engage their expertise to ensure we build the very best that is possible.

“Majestic will be one of our trusted advisors in our pursuit of success both on and off the field, meaning the built infrastructure must be world-class.”

Lee Marsden, owner and operator of Majestic Construction, added: “This is a hugely exciting project to be involved in, and one that comes with significant responsibility.

“Transforming an existing stadium into a venue fit for Super League rugby involves a complex programme of work, so having strong communication and co-ordination between everyone involved is absolutely critical.

“Our role is to work closely with Huddersfield Giants and Marshall Construction to help ensure the project runs smoothly, challenges are managed effectively and the club’s vision is delivered.

“Ultimately, it’s about creating a stadium the Giants can be proud of and which provides a fantastic experience for supporters for years to come.”

Majestic’s work at the Accu Stadium has included the installation of a safe-standing area and a new screen and upgrading the directors’ and press areas.
