SAM POWELL will take on a new role at Warrington Wolves in 2027 after confirming he will call time on a 15-year playing career at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old hooker will join Sam Burgess’ coaching staff in a role that will allow him to continue to drive standards and inspire the next generation of talent at the club.
Powell has made 74 appearances for Warrington, whom he joined ahead of the 2024 campaign after a hugely successful spell at hometown club Wigan Warriors.
Progressing through the club’s youth set-up, he lifted the Academy Grand Final trophy before earning his spot in the first team, going on to win a multitude of honours including three Super League titles, three League Leaders’ Shields and the World Club Challenge across 284 appearances.
Upon joining Warrington, the Wigan St Patrick’s and Hindley ARLFC product made an immediate impact, quickly establishing himself as a key member of the squad.
He was a mainstay in his debut campaign, featuring 33 times as Burgess’ side reached both the Challenge Cup final (which they lost 18-8 to Wigan) and Super League play-offs (losing in the semi-finals to Hull KR).
And though time on the pitch has not come as regular for Powell this year – with the latest of his 14 appearances having come in last month’s win over Hull FC – he has become highly regarded for the increasing role he has played off it.
“Reflecting on my career, I can hold my head high and say I’ve given it my all,” said Powell, who represented England Knights at international level in 2018 and 2019.
“I’m very proud of representing two top Super League clubs over my time playing.
“Firstly, to my hometown club, Wigan where I spent most of my career. Some very special moments for my family and I.
“Then onto the Wire, where I’ve met some top people and really enjoyed being a part of this club. My time here isn’t coming to an end just yet.
“Thank you to my wife, Ria, and my three beautiful girls. Thank you to all the players I’ve played with. Thank you to all the coaches that have had an impact on my playing career.
“It’s been a great journey.”
Warrington will honour Powell tomorrow night when they host Toulouse Olympique.
