Tom Ratchford aiming to roar with Swinton Lions

SWINTON LIONS have retained hooker Tom Ratchford – and the former Wigan player is keen to help the Sale side kick on under Anthony Murray.

The coach knows a thing or two about playing number nine, having done it for a string of clubs, including Leigh and Barrow, over his own career.

Murray, who has also coached Barrow, North Wales, Gloucestershire All Golds, Workington and Whitehaven, took the Lions’ hot seat after Paul Wood left in March.

He led Swinton to six wins and a draw in 17 matches, and 17th place in the table, and Ratchford, who made 27 appearances, notching five tries and four goals in what was his first season as a Lion, thinks there is plenty of potential in a squad that also features former St Helens hooker Josh Eaves.

“I really enjoyed my first season in the Championship and especially in a Lions shirt,” said the former Wigan St Judes youngster, who came through the Warriors Academy and had a five-match loan stint with Rochdale in 2024.

“We have a really good set of lads and I can’t wait to get stuck into pre-season and turn things around next year.

“The supporters stuck with us through a difficult year and I’m looking forward to playing on front of them again.”

Murray said: “I’m really pleased to see another young, in-form player staying at the club for another season.

“Tom is a committed player who works extremely hard for the team and always gives his best.

“I’m looking forward to helping him continue to develop and progress in Swinton Lions colours.”

Backrower Trent Kelly-Duffy has also been kept on for 2027.
