Retiring Jay Pitts backs Wakefield Trinity for long-term success

JAY PITTS believes this Wakefield Trinity team can enjoy a period of sustained success.

Pitts, who hung up his boots at the end of the 2026 Super League season, bowed out a Grand Final winner with Wakefield at Old Trafford earlier this month.

It was the last time Pitts would run out onto a Rugby League field following a first-grade career that began in 2008 and spanned 455 games.

A local junior, Pitts left Wakefield back in 2009, and after spells at Leeds Rhinos, Hull FC, and London Broncos, he returned to the club back in 2020.

He was part of a squad that was relegated in 2023 but which earned promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt in 2024 and went on to lift the Grand Final trophy two years later.

But whilst the 36-year-old is sad that he won’t get to play a role in the future, he believes that Wakefield’s journey is only just beginning and that fans should be excited about what the future holds for his boyhood club.

“It’s incredibly exciting. Look at the players that are here and the age of them as well,” Pitts said.

“Look at the culture, look at where the club is going and what Matt Ellis has done with the club already.

“It’s an amazing place to play rugby. We had no real big-game experience going into the Grand Final and to play such a professional game and be so disciplined, it stands Wakefield in good stead moving forwards.

“I wish I was ten years younger because I am going to miss it so much. I was so happy to finish the way I did.

“This team can go forever and ever, it’s very exciting for everyone at the club.”
