GOOLE VIKINGS have signed former Castleford Academy halfback or hooker Zach McGowan as they continue to stock their squad with youthful potential.
McGowan spent more than three years in the Super League club’s development system before more recently playing for Hull-based community-game team Myton Warriors.
His addition to the Goole ranks followed the award of a one-year contract extension to another ex-Castleford player, winger Leroy Ncube.
The 19-year-old scored three tries in four Goole games this year and is looking to push on.
The Vikings have also recruited Hull FC hooker Alistair Swyer, 19.
McGowan helped Myton win the National League Cross Conference Shield (tier three of that competition) before signing on the dotted line at Goole.
“Zach is still young, but he has a lot of attributes to like,” explained coach Brett Ferres.
“He plays fast and direct, and his taste of the Conference (Yorkshire A division) this year, testing himself against men, will have been a good grounding.
“Zach is really driven and wants to do well. He is another one who fits that bill in terms of being young and hungry and will keep our spine players on their toes.
“It gives us great depth across the field and there’s every chance someone like Zach can put their hand up in pre-season and grab a shirt.”
McGowan added: “After my time at Castleford, I needed a new challenge. When the opportunity to sign for Goole came along it was a no-brainer.
“Everybody is talking about the Vikings at the minute and it’s an exciting club to be at, which matches my own ambitions.
“With the coaches, staff and facilities, there’s a real feel-good factor.
“I’m looking forward to working with Brett and the senior players to try and learn and develop my game.”
