A happy Easter for Women’s Rugby League at Featherstone

The Women’s Rugby League Association’s closing games of the 2018/19 season take place on 21st April, Easter Sunday, when their blue-riband WRLA Challenge Cup & Plate Finals take place at the LD Nutrition Stadium, Post Office Road, the home of Featherstone Rovers RLFC writes Steve Manning.

The action begins at High Noon with the WRLA Plate Final, an all-Premier Division clash when East Leeds, last year’s beaten semi-finalists, play newcomers to the league Keighley Albion, who have made a big impact on their debut season.

Whoever comes out on top will result in a new name being on the trophy.

At 2.00pm the WRLA Challenge Cup features a ‘War of the Roses’ clash between another two newcomers to the

league this season, Featherstone Lionesses and Orrell St James in what is a David v Goliath contest.

Both sides are going for the `double’ with the Lions and the Saints already crowned champions of the Premier and First Divisions respectively.

WRLA Chair Steve Manning said: “If this year’s finals are as good as last year then everyone attending is in for a thrilling 160 minutes treat of rollercoaster Rugby League, with all four sides showing their skills in two mouth-watering finals trying to make history by winning the respective trophies for the first time.

“Once again the finals are being played at the spiritual home of WRLA, the LD Nutrition Stadium, the home of Featherstone Rovers. It’s a superb facility, the envy of many super league and semi-professional clubs.

“We feel honoured to be having our finals here, I thank the club for the use of their ground again and their continued support for WRLA.”

He concluded: “It’s a case of on any given day, any given moment, which is the magic of the cup. I’m sure of one thing. All four teams will be giving their all to come out winners on the day. Let the games begin.”
