ANDY LAST was left “absolutely stunned” and “mentally frazzled” as Hull FC sprung a shock on Leeds Rhinos to end a disappointing season on a high.
Logan Moy, Lloyd Kemp and Lennon Clark all crossed for converted tries in the 18-12 win, with the Rhinos made to pay for a host of missed chances as they fell to a third consecutive defeat at what had previously been a fortress AMT Headingley.
“Where’s that been all season?” said Last of the victory, which lifted Hull up to eleventh in his final match in interim charge.
“To win the game with 34 per cent possession? I don’t know, I’m absolutely stunned, mentally frazzled.
“It was outstanding, to come up with that effort and performance is amazing.”
An impressive defensive effort was the cornerstone of Hull’s performance, with the Black and Whites withstanding a series of goal-line drop-outs and forcing an at times desperate Leeds into a multitude of errors.
“We consistently turned them away,” explained Last. “Our grit and desire was there to see.
“It was nice for us to confirm we weren’t at the bottom by our own efforts.
“They dominated us in terms of position and completions but couldn’t turn us away.”
Young hooker Lloyd Kemp particularly caught the eye, scoring a perfect three conversions as well as burrowing over for his first try of the season.
“Lloyd has trained really hard every session and competes,” said Last of the 19-year-old, who has featured seven times for Hull this season, predominantly across the backs.
“I trust him, he’s a joy to coach and his performance was top drawer, a really wholehearted display.
“It’s been very challenging emotionally this season for me, there’s been such inconsistency and that’s the question we’ve got to answer, but this was a great win.”
