Batley Bulldogs back in pink for breast cancer charities

BATLEY BULLDOGS were in the pink as they played Keighley as part of the club’s ongoing campaign to raise funds for and awareness of breast cancer charities.

The home side donned a special kit for last Sunday’s game, won 22-18, which formed a central part of their annual Beverley’s Pink Weekend.

The event was started in 2014 by Beverley Nicholas, the wife of long-serving Batley chairman Kevin Nicholas.

Beverley, a tireless worker for both the club and her fundraising project, died after suffering from breast cancer in May 2019.

This year, Batley were aiming to go past the £250,000 mark in money raised, and said via social media: “A huge thank you to everyone for their support. It was great to see the Keighley fans supporting Pink Weekend too. A family sport.”

Batley coach James Ford said: “It was great to see the Rugby League community come out to support a great event and important breast cancer charities.”

The win bolstered Batley’s push for the play-offs, and their bid was helped by a defeat for neighbours Dewsbury at home to Rochdale on Wednesday.

That means Batley will clinch a top-ten spot by winning the Heavy Woollen derby at Dewsbury on Sunday.
