James Bentley looks set to turn down interest from Castleford Tigers and Hull Kingston Rovers to sign a new deal with St Helens.
The 23-year-old has commanded interest from the two Yorkshire clubs, but League Express understands he will extend his stay with the Champions on a multi-year deal.
Bentley is widely regarded as one of the best young prospects in the game. He joined St Helens in 2018 after being named Championship’s Young Player of the Year the season before.
So far he has made 26 appearances for Saints in a variety of positions, with his utility value coming to the fore.
Predominantly used as a backrower, his retention is a huge boost to St Helens, who have seen several of their off-contract players attract interest.
Jack Ashworth is one of the hottest commodities in the competition and a decision on his future is imminent, while Matty Costello is another off-contract player on the radar of other clubs.
But retaining Bentley is a boost for the club, with their senior backrowers all in the closing stages of their careers.
Zeb Taia, 35, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, 34 and Dom Peyroux, 31, are all in the final year of their current deals with the club, while 32-year-old Joseph Paulo’s deal ends next season.
With changes inevitably coming in the near future, Saints saw Bentley’s retention as crucial, with his role set to increase in the coming years. Tying him down ensures they don’t have to find a replacement.
