WORKINGTON TOWN have added a globetrotting, code-crossing forward to their squad.
Bear Williams joins after two seasons in South Sydney Rabbitohs’ set-up and fresh from spending pre-season with Warrington Wolves.
But the prop hails from London with a background in rugby union, most notably spending two seasons with second-tier outfit Cornish Pirates.
He has also played union in New Zealand, for Wellington-based Marist St Pats.
After converting to the 13-a-side code, Williams spent two years in the Rabbitohs’ set-up, making a total of eight appearances for their second-string in the New South Wales Cup.
Despite not being kept on at Warrington following two months on trial, he did earn a strong recommendation from Wolves director of rugby Gary Chambers.
Ash Kilpatrick, Workington’s recruitment co-ordinator, explained: “Bear came to our attention around August/September time when we were looking for middles and he was at South Sydney.
“Bear sent us clips and Jonty (Gorley, Town head coach) liked what he saw, reminding him of a front-rower he had at Whitehaven in Huw Worthington.
“Fast forward a few months and Bear became available after completing a pre-season at Warrington.
“I spoke to Gary Chambers who couldn’t speak highly enough of him and said he would be an asset for us if we could get him in.
“This recommendation was highly valued and the club acted quickly to secure Bear’s services.”
