Cunningham wants his players to protect Walsh

St Helens coach, Keiron Cunningham has called for more protection from his own players for half-back Luke Walsh.

Disappointed that Walsh didn’t get the necessary protection from his team-mates during their defeat at Leeds last Friday, Cunningham is looking for an improvement in that this week.

He insisted that Walsh is not on the field to make tackles, he has an important and pivotal role to guide the Saints around the field.  “I have not flown Luke Walsh 12,000 miles to make 50 tackles a match, ” he told the St Helens Star.  “He is here to run this team for me.2

“Luke is back in the team after suffering a really serious injury, and although he has been having trouble with his toe he has been flying in training this week.  I felt he was let down pretty badly last Friday night, by some of the players around him.”
