Cut down on interchanges, says Gallen

Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen has called for a radical shift in the way the game uses interchanges, saying that the best way to get rid of wrestling is to reduce them.

The rules have been adjusted this year so that all those involved in wrapping up the ball carrier must free him simultaneously.

But Gallen believes rather than adopting new rules, it is the current ones that should be tweaked – with the interchange rule the one he called for a switch in.

“Cut the interchange down,” Gallen said.

“I’m one of the people that’s been saying that for years. Then all of a sudden you won’t have 115-kilogram blokes playing for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, they will have to play a whole half. If they want to stop the wrestle, that’s the way to go.”
