‘Defensive spirit’ on show but Sam Burgess wants more from Warrington Wolves

AFTER securing a hard-fought 18-6 win over St Helens, Sam Burgess praised Warrington Wolves’ defensive efforts but challenged them to deliver more.

“I really liked our defensive spirit,” said the Warrington head coach. “They put in a huge amount of effort to get that win.

“There are still a number of areas we can get better at. We need to tidy up a few things because we are looking clunky in a lot of areas, but it is a work in progress.”

Having come under a lot of pressure in the first half, Burgess felt Albert Hopoate’s try before half-time was a crucial one in deciding the outcome of the game.

“It was one of the most important moments of the game,” he explained.

“We knew the game was going to be tough in the first half because of the conditions – it was tough clearing our territory.

“Even if we were 6-0 down, we were okay with that because we knew the tide would turn and we would be able to win territory back, but the try on half-time was a big moment.”
