Batley Bulldogs winger Derrell Olpherts given six-match ban

BATLEY BULLDOGS winger Derrell Olpherts has received a six-match suspension, a fine and 36 penalty points for a Grade F Unacceptable Language charge.

The incident occurred during their 50-4 win over Goole Vikings last Saturday.

A specific type of unacceptable language has not been made public but the charge stated he had used “verbal abuse based on race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, national or ethnic origin or any other form of unacceptable language and/or behaviour”.

Batley are yet to decide whether to appeal against Olpherts’ ban, which would begin after Sunday’s home fixture with Halifax Panthers.

The length of suspension would mean the former Super League player – who is currently one short of 150 career tries – would then be sidelined until the visit of Newcastle Thunder on August 9.

James Ford’s side sit ninth in the Championship, two points inside the top-ten play-offs, having won seven of their 13 fixtures.
