Eagles land Wheeldon on three-year deal

Sheffield Eagles have pulled off their biggest signing of the winter by securing the services of Castleford Tigers forward Scott Wheeldon.

Prop Wheeldon, 29, made 15 appearances for Cas last season and is believed to have turned down a number of other clubs to link up with Mark Aston’s side.

His move to Sheffield shall see Wheeldon embark on his first period outside of Super League.

He began his career with Hull FC and appeared for the Black and Whites in the 2006 Super League Grand Final defeat to St. Helens. He has also enjoyed spells with Hull Kingston Rovers and London Broncos before switching to Castleford in 2014. Whilst at The Jungle he helped the Tigers to the Challenge Cup Final and played at Wembley in their defeat to Leeds Rhinos in 2014.

“We are thrilled to have brought Scott to Sheffield Eagles,” said head coach Mark Aston

“Scott’s professionalism, experience and undoubted quality will make him a great addition for this club and I cannot wait to start working with him.”

“He has a wealth of experience and he knows what it is like to play in rugby league’s biggest games,” Aston continued.

“After chatting at length with Scott and telling him about our plans for the future I knew that he would fit right in here. He comes to me with the highest of recommendations from people I respect in the game with the likes of Daryl Powell and Liam Finn giving him glowing reports.

“Scott is a terrific player and a top class pro, he will have a massive impact both on and off the field with the club as we look to develop some very exciting young players.”
