WAKEFIELD TRINITY are entering a new era under owner Matt Ellis following the completion of his takeover last night.
Ellis has already appointed Daryl Powell as head coach with the promise of investment into the playing squad and facilities.
With that in mind, which players could Powell bring in for Wakefield’s 2024 Championship season?
Jermaine McGillvary
With Rugby League Live confirming that Jermaine McGillvary is on the radar of Wakefield, the move would certainly make sense given his exit from Huddersfield. The veteran winger still outlined his desire to be a full-time player and with Trinity confirming the desire to do just that in the Championship, it seemingly paves the way for the 35-year-old to run out at Belle Vue for the 2024 season.
Connor Wynne
Wakefield need players with Super League experience for their first year in the second tier since 1998 – and Connor Wynne would certainly provide that. Wynne was on loan at the Bradford Bulls for most of 2023 after being deemed surplus to requirements at Hull FC. Still only 22 years of age, the outside back would bolster Wakefield’s backline considerably.
Jude Ferreira
Another player exiting Hull FC, Jude Ferreira has yet to be given his chance to shine in a full-time environment. The centre spent time on loan with London Broncos, but Wakefield could well take a punt on the 20-year-old to build a squad capable of reaching the top of the Championship table.
Greg Eden
After a move to Featherstone fell through due to Rovers’ failure to earn promotion to Super League, Greg Eden is now a free agent following his exit from Castleford. Linking up with former head coach Daryl Powell again would perhaps be too big of a lure to turn down for the veteran winger. And it would enable Eden to stay full-time.
Luis Johnson
Following his exit from Hull KR, Luis Johnson is in need of a new club. The 24-year-old almost has a point to prove after failing to nail down a first-team spot with the Robins or previous club Warrington – and a move to Wakefield could enable Johnson to kickstart his career in the back-row, particularly with Kelepi Tanginoa on his way out at Trinity.
