Former Super League supremo takes on Cornish football challenge

FORMER Super League chief executive and executive chairman Robert Elstone has taken up an advisory role with non-league football team Truro City.

He will provide advice and support as the Cornish club aim to bounce back after being relegated from the National League to that competition’s South division (level six of the football pyramid).

Eric Perez, the Canadian entrepreneur and sports executive behind the creation of Rugby League clubs Toronto Wolfpack and Cornwall, recently stood down as Truro’s chairman and chief executive.

In his time in charge, Truro moved back to Cornwall at their new stadium on the outskirts of the city (they had played in Devon and Gloucestershire) and won the National League South in 2024-25, so reaching level five for the first time.

Elstone, who was with Super League from 2018 to 2021, has experience in football as a former chief executive of Everton.

The 62-year-old also advised Stockport County during their time in the National League before the club returned to the English Football League in 2022.

“Having met the club’s senior management, I could not help but be impressed with the clarity of vision and determination for both Truro City and the football charity to succeed,” Elstone told the club website.

“I have been fortunate to have worked at the highest level in English football but find the uniqueness of this Cornish club compelling, and I see huge potential.

“Working at all levels of the club, I hope to help them in achieving their ambitions.”

Truro chief executive Robin Karkeek said: “I am thoroughly delighted that Robert has agreed to work with us and we are very excited.

“The opportunity to work with someone of his calibre and national recognition within sport is a step change for the club.

“It is also recognition of the club’s growth potential, to become a beacon of sporting excellence for Cornwall and beyond.”
