Castleford Tigers coach Ryan Carr reluctant to look too far ahead

RYAN CARR was bitterly disappointed by his side’s 14-20 home defeat to York Knights on Friday night, which almost certainly means that any faint hopes the Tigers had of reaching the top six play-off places have now ended.

“I’m disappointed by the fundamentals in our game,” said Carr, who had overseen a recent run of three wins from five games, but whose approach to coaching is to look no further than the next game.

“It’s a one day at a time, one week at a time mentality for us. We can’t get caught up in the big picture stuff.

“Being a new team, if you start looking too far ahead, you lose sight of what’s important.

“It’s one week at a time, one game at a time.”

Carr believes that his side has made progress this season and Friday’s attendance of 8,079 suggested that the Castleford supporters were buying into that improvement.

“I’m pleased with the journey we’ve had so far,” said Carr.

“Every journey has bumps in the road, but they only make you stronger if you come out of it at the other side and you remain stern in what you believe in and not let outside noise turn you away from that.

“One thing we’ve done since day one of pre-season is stay on course to be the team we want to be.

“We are starting to see what that looks like and we believe the best version of us can go with anyone.”

Like seven other Super League clubs, the Tigers had no players in England coach Brian McDermott’s provisional 38-man England squad for this year’s World Cup.

“Any representative accolade is on the back of a good team playing well,” said Carr.

“So if we can play well as a group, then individuals will get rewarded after that. But having said that, I don’t think our players are taking their eyes off our season and our team. They know how much hard work we’ve put into what we’re building and they understand it’s a byproduct of the team doing well.

“We want to get this club playing consistently at its best every week to get individuals recognised off the back of that.”
