  1. Youre right with that lot, LE. The new proposal looks a right dogs breakfast
  2. The situation in the 5 Scottish Highlands ski areas http://www.winterhighland.info/
  3. True enough but wouldnt play in teh golf be finished by 6pm/ Its pitch black round these parts not long after
  4. Apperarences at Wembley (CC) and Elland Road (WCC), 4th on the table and SL semi final...but ultimately no pot. Does that make it a good season or a bad one? When does ambition and high expectation become greed?
  5. The First Gulf War finished in 1991 (Scarborough rock band Little Angels dropped their proposed album title of 'Bomber' then, thought a bit tasteless), but the RL club rebrands didnt happen till 1996
  6. The original marketing idea for Halifax was 'Bombers'. If I recall, the club was even listed in League Express as such for a few weeks. Then some shrewd chap thought that synergising the X in Halifax and Sox just might attract sponsorship from Halifax ('Get a little Xtra help, dee dee dah dah dah, from the Halifax') Building Society as it then was. It didnt and the name didnt either
  7. Bring back that rugby ball shaped clock! fantastic
  8. Yes it would under the existing formula, but this is longwinded and over complicated, and when 8th is involved open to ridicule. Everyone has a preference, mine would be:- Week 1 - 1 bye, 2v5, 3v4 (ie 2 eliminators) Week 2 - 1 bye, 2 v 3 (one eliminator) Week 3 - final Top 5 are involved, 6th downwards dont deserve to be Fewer games so our best players are less knackered by the time the internationals come round Use the exta week gained for something useful (week off before 4N, mid season international, WCC) Removes games that arnt eliminators Obviates preposterous 'club call' Saves rehashing the same 'big' fixtures to the point where they are routine Most importantly, gives real value to finishing top
  9. The Minor Premiers should collect the shield and go straight to the finalno further justification needed.
  10. A fine example of sartorial elegence. Wore one meself during the 1995 WC opener, far touchline about 20 yards from halfway at teh front, and my red rimmd glasses of the time which were, frankly, preposterous - captured by Ray French et al for posterity
  11. Don't forget the young children led away in tears, theres always a few of them
  12. Maybe we should all just accept that this is sport not clinical surgery and inconsistency has and always will happen
  13. Another Donkey day out, England v France from Shedingley, many texts complementing my beret and home made tricolour flag
  14. Obvious anti-Saints conspiracy, Ray As a variation to this subject, what is the ruling when a player kicks a second ball on? Remenber that one as clearly?
  15. Remember that. Sky showed Betts sulking in the dugout, obscuring the first three letters of the sponsors sign behind him CADDICK. How we laughed.
  16. Finally got to watch the Cup Final yesterday and saw a couple of mates, fortysomething professionals, doing the classic excitably pointing at the screen thing as they saw themselves Over the years I guess most of us will have caught a brief glimpse of ourslves on the telly. GB v NZ at Blackburn made me realise how white my hair had gone. Any anecdotes?
  17. Both posts and articles have always been worth reading, Cliff, informative enlightening and entertaining... ...even if one always needed to put the kettle on before embarking on reading them
  18. Dunno which is more profound, Agent Riley getting RL onto the airwaves or the players moving to Salford. (He also mentionned Greg Inglis is out of this years 4N)
  19. I wonder how the ref actually saw it? Looked like a bad tackle then 2 players ran in on 1 to violently retaliate. His options probably were:- 1 Bin Ablett for the tackle - cant really do that under the rules 2 Dismiss Ablett then what to do about the retaliators ? yellow card them, which would leave Wigan down to 11 3 Put it all on report, enough doubt and confusion (did the Wigan player slip into it a bit?) to defer the decision to the judiciary So thats what he did. The actions of the retaliators muddied Gansons decision. If they had kept their heads Ablett would probably have been straight red carded and Wigan would have had a man advantage for an hour
  20. Maybe the alternative to the old fashioned, non-PC international representitive sport as we know it for the meantime is for RL to turn into commercially representitive sport as seen in Formula 1 and pro-cycling. Scrap the Kangaroos / Kiwis etc and anyone could then play for any team. Best players to the highest payer. That way we needn't bother with tiresome old traditions like the Haka, national anthems, pride in the shirt etc and qualification would become a non-argument. We could look forward to a series featuring maybe Engage, Telstra, Rempart, SP and Malaysia Airlines. It's the future. Actually, it might be the future.
  21. That wasnt my point. The characters I saw lining up clearly had no heritage from the nations they were representing. I could have defined two of them by skin colour but (lest anyone get touchy and accusative) preferred to do so by name. Shock appointment by the British Olympic Committee today as Steve Macnamara was poached from England RL; "Were going for gearld in 2012, The whole country will be inspired by Team GB, weve filled our national squad with some second string Ethiopian long distant runners, picked up a few Chinese gymnasts whove been living here for almost a year now and weve got a medal shot in archery with a bloke from Bhutan who has a grandfather from the Isle of Man. I'm doing whats best for Team GB" Maybe we just forget representitive international competition if the competitors have no relevance to the nations theyre representing?
  22. The start list for the 100m heats included:- Ryan Moseley (Austria) - actually English (rather than American, my mistake, my assumption was that most black sprinters with Angliscised names that I hadnt heard of were probably American) Saidy Ndure (Norway) - actaully Gambian Dmirty Glushchenko (Israel) actually Ukranian Franci Obikwelu (Portugal) actually Nigerian Forom ths minute snapshot of one event it seems if you like your sport populated by soldiers of fortune, it seems track athletics is as good as any. If youre not good enough for your country, go and find a country you are good enough for. Id hate this to be the case in RL You know what I mean about Chambers.
  23. Saw five minutes of athletics tonight, a 100m heat. One of the athletes with an American name was respresenting Austria, another representing Norway and a banned drugs cheat was representing GB. Lets not lose our credibility to that extent
  24. If you want England to become a SL Allstars side then fine, lobby for that then buy a ticket. As a RL supporter Id prefer that the England RL team represented the state of our game in this country and was made up of people who were born and grew up here Picking a team from players witha technicality in their parents birth certificate or who blew in from overseas and lived here for a few years and fancied their chances devalues teh international game eyond credibility
