Newcastle Thunder have announced an unchanged starting 13 from last week’s iProSport League 1 Cup victory over York City Knights as the North East side travel to Dewsbury Rams in the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

Stanley Gene has opted on a stable selection for the match in Yorkshire, after his side put in arguably their most impressive performance to date after overturning an 18-0 deficit to win 24-38 away from home.

The settled nature of the squad extends to the bench where the only change from last week sees Matty Barron come in for Sonny Esslemont, who is unavailable for the competition.

The fourth round tie gives Thunder the chance to renew a rivalry from pre season, when they defeated a youthful Rams side at Kingston Park, although Gene is fully aware that Thunder’s hosts will be a completely different proposition at home and in a competitive fixture.

Gene said: “Dewsbury are a good strong side who are going to provide us with a really big test on Sunday. They will be a different side to the one we played in January but after the performance against York, I think we can go well.”

“It is one of those games where we have nothing to lose.  It will be a big challenge to our leaders and experienced players and if they and the rest of the squad can lift themselves to the task, then we have a good chance of getting into the next round when the Super League clubs come in.”

“We will need to win the arm wrestle up front and be ready to contest in the middle of the field, but we showed we are capable of that in the second half last week so we will see how we go.”
